I love the ocean. Many wonderful things are found in the waters of the world, including many minerals that we are dependent on for good health. Magnesium, for example, is one of the salts contained in our deep blue seas.

Most of us dont live near the beach though, and cannot take the time out of our busy schedule for that natural foot bath, but we can pull out a bottle of Transderma magnesium oil after the shower and reap the benefits of the elements contained in the ocean.

Nutrition is a hot topic, but one that is full of confusion. When we think about what we eat we have to consider that its a two way street. Food nourishes, but it also takes vitamins and minerals to process those foods. That fast food diet, or that home cooked fried chicken may take more than it gives us. Visit any federally funded health site, and you will likely find data that shows that we are deficient in magnesium.

Let us delve into the world of magnesium in the body. Your body definitely needs magnesium to function. There is a storehouse of magnesium contained in your bones, right alongside that calcium that we hear so much about. About 50 percent of our supply of magnesium is stored in our bones. Blood is a different matter, with only about 1 percent of our magnesium maintained in the blood.

How do we keep up, and maintain healthy nutritional levels? Not too long ago I learned about transdermal magnesium. I tried it for the ache in shoulder, and the ache diminished. I gave some to my sister, and the pain in her knee was gone within the same day.

Magnesium deficiency has been associated with depression, mental fatigue, chronic tiredness, and even pain relief or release. Some say that they feel calmer and sleep better after a magnesium bath or by using the magnesium oil after their bath.

There are over 300 biochemical actions in our body that need magnesium. That sounds pretty darn important to me. According to this same medical authority there is concern about continued sub-levels of magnesium in a large part of our population. Perhaps we should go back to basics, such as basic nutrition through the elements of life.

Zinc is a vital mineral required for the body. Many people may not realize the importance of this mineral hence let us focus on zinc supplements. Zinc helps in developing immunity and fighting against various diseases. During pregnancy zinc intake should be more in women. Multivitamin tablets are good sources of zinc.

Some people swear by the leaves of feverfew, eating one per day which is easy way to take it. It is important, however, that you do so regularly, since it can take for up to 6 to 8 weeks for you to notice a reduction in your attacks. Don’t give up after 5 or 6 weeks, but continue, since the results will be well worth it. If you stop for a week or two you will have to start all over again. You might get a sore mouth and perhaps mouth ulcers to start with, but these will eventually go once your body is used to it.

Riboflavin, vitamin B 2, is also believed to useful in reducing the duration and frequency of migraine attacks, working in much the same way as magnesium. It is known that there are many cases of people who suffer from vitamin B 2 deficiency also suffering from migraines, and a riboflavin supplement is also worth trying if you are a consistent victim of this condition.

Patients with osteoporosis can be at risk due to the deficiency of magnesium in their bodies. Magnesium controls the metabolic activity of calcium and those hormones responsible for controlling calcium. It has been noted that magnesium supplements can increase the mineral density in bones. For all those who suffer from hypertension, magnesium supplements can help them to deal with it. In addition, healthy and balanced diet containing magnesium will help to deal with magnesium deficiency.

Green leafy vegetables, meat, etc are good sources of magnesium. Such foods are normally high in fibers and potassium, which are also good for health. Magnesium also helps in controlling the levels of insulin so it is good for patients with diabetes. It regulates insulin level in the body, which helps in controlling the blood sugar level.

It is not easy to live with a migraine since it can be completely debilitating. Some just have a severe headache, while others are affected for days at a time. The headache can become before and after the onset of the shimmering lights and other optical effects that are generated by the brain.

If your migraine is at the front of the head, then you should try ginger. Unlike feverfew, ginger works on a migraine as it is occurring, and improvement can be achieved for a bad migraine within half an hour. In fact if, like many people, you can feel a migraine coming on, half a teaspoon of freshly ground ginger can stop the pain before it starts.

However, particularly high dose of magnesium can lead to nausea, diarrhea, low blood pressure and many other unpleasant side effects, so do not take more than the RDA (recommended daily allowance) in your supplement.

All vitamins are vital for our health. However, we will focus on Vitamin D supplements and their benefits. The easiest way to obtain Vitamin D is exposure to the sun. Vitamin D controls the levels of phosphorus and calcium in the blood. Deficiency of this vitamin may cause rickets, liver and kidney diseases.

Fish oils, cod liver oils are the best sources of Vitamin D. Therefore, seafood eaters won’t have to worry about this deficiency. In some countries, all dairy products are fortified with Vitamin D so that the risk of its deficiency is less. Vitamin D supplements play an important role in reducing cancer since its intake kills cancer cells.

Response to last week’s Reflections . . . After reading your newsletter, I thought you might like another true story that happened 22 years ago.

I have four children, and I didn’t have much money raising them. One Sunday in church, my 6 year-old son was listening attentively while the preacher talked about asking and receiving. He said that when we pray, we should pray believing that we had already received. That night as my son was saying his prayers, he said, “Thank you God for the bike you are going to send me.” My heart dropped because I knew there was no way to come up with enough money for a bike.

Chris prayed faithfully every night for about three weeks, then one day the UPS man delivered a huge box. I had no clue where this box came from, but as soon as Chris saw it, he knew it was his box. Sure enough, inside the box was a brand new Hot Wheels Bike. He danced around singing Thank you, God while we put the bike together! Then he rushed outside with his new bike.

About a month later my sister called and asked if we had received a bike. I was stunned. She said that some company was offering a free bike for some coupons or something. She had saved enough coupons for her son and for mine! She sent the coupons in about two weeks before Chris ever started praying for his bike, and she never knew that he was wanting one. Isn’t God good? R.S., TX

Based on Edgar Cayce’s Atomadine, this supplement is superior to many on the market.

Detoxified Iodine is totally different from the typical toxic iodine in its denser state sold as an antiseptic, or as iodine tri-chloride (claiming to be atomized), or as added to potassium iodine to make it safer. It is also unlike glandular or prescriptions containing hormones that take over the thyroid’s job, instead of nutritionally building the thyroid to do it’s own job. Seaweed, seafood, greens, raw sunflower seeds, are good sources for iodine, but may not have the levels necessary to support the thyroid fully for good homeostasis in the body.

For health benefits you can put drops of Detoxified Iodine in a glass of water to drink, or you can also apply drops to your skin and allow it to be absorbed transdermally. It can be added to water as a disinfectant and is safe to put in your pets’ water.

Detoxified Iodine is an antimicrobial that eliminates bacteria, virus, yeast, mold, fungus, protozoa, etc.

The thyroid gland is the principle user of iodine in the body. Detoxified Iodine protects the thyroid gland from toxic radioactivity in the environment. Additionally, iodine is an endocrine stimulatory element and will up-regulate the entire glandular system, the stomach, intestines, colon, skin, vaginal secretions, etc.

It Works! . . . I’ve tried nearly all forms of iodine, and I can tell you that Detoxified Iodine is by far the most bioavailable form. Whatever Edgar Cayce did with this stuff to make it so “magical,” Phil has recreated its powers. If you’re serous about getting healthy or maintaining your health, it’s a no-brainer that you should take iodine.

I’m using it because of a neuropathy (nerve pain/damage) issue and I’m starting to see early signs of regeneration. Exciting times are ahead folks! Andrew, TX

Management of C-reactive protein (a key marker of inflammation)

Helps stop tooth cavities by its anti bacteria propertities

Maintenance of tooth enamel

Clearly, magnesium is a nutrient you don’t want to get caught short on. Especially because magnesium has an important type 2 diabetes connection, which in turn has a gallstone connection.

And just ask anyone who’s had them - you don’t want gallstones.

All too easy

Last year I told you about a meta-analysis of seven large magnesium/diabetes studies from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. Six of the studies found a significant link between high magnesium intake and reduced risk of type 2 diabetes. And the sources of magnesium (either from diet or supplements combined with diet) were equally effective.

The Karolinska team found that diabetes risk dropped by 15 percent for every 100 mg increase in magnesium intake.

Unfortunately, magnesium deficiency can develop all too easily. Menstruation, prolonged stress, a high intake of starches, alcohol, diuretics and some prescription drugs (such as antibiotics) have all been shown to reduce magnesium levels.

In the February 2008 issue of The American Journal of Gastroenterology, researchers at the University of Kentucky Medical Center noted that low magnesium levels have been associated with high insulin concentrations. They write: “Chronic hypersecretion of insulin, a feature of insulin resistance, may increase the cholesterol saturation index in the bile, and thus may facilitate gallstone formation.”

Magnesium deficiency may also increase gallstone risk by raising triglyceride levels while lowering HDL cholesterol levels.

Gallstone Risk Assessment

To investigate the effect of long-term magnesium intake on the risk of gallstone disease, the Kentucky team (in collaboration with Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and the National Cancer Institute) launched a study to follow magnesium intake and medical records for more than 42,000 men.

Results:

- 2,195 cases of gallstones were diagnosed over an average follow up period of 13 years

- The average magnesium intake was about 353 mg per day

- The highest magnesium intake was 454 mg per day

- The lowest magnesium intake was 262 mg per day

- Men with the highest intake were nearly 30 percent less likely to develop gallstones compared to men with the lowest intake

- Men with the highest intake from dietary sources alone were 32 percent less likely to develop gallstones

- Studies have shown that the average adult doesn’t get the RDA of magnesium, which is 420 mg for men and 320 mg for women.

Dietary sources of magnesium include leafy green vegetables, avocados, nuts, and whole grains.

Technical literature describes a cramp — as an involuntary contraction of a muscle that doesn’t then relax – well with that much pain — I would not choose it and it wouldn’t be voluntary is what I can say!

When I exercise hard– after being not very active for days, I usually get a muscle cramp.

If you reviewed the scientific literature on cramps– you would find that “they have still not found a way to cure it,” and the cause is still described as “unknown”.

A well read doctor may tell your that — muscle cramps are is made worse by the lowering of sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium salt levels in our bodies due primarily to exercise and dehydration — lack of drinking enough good clean water.

So you get a Cramp:

 1. Stop the activity — if you can, and you are not participating in sport activity.

2. try a little Gentle stretching and massage the cramping muscle with your hands or get a friend to help you do it.

3. Spray on Magnesium Oil

On the Magnesium web sites — they swear by taking transdermal Magnesium every day. It is cheap and also reduces regular muscle and joint pain.

What Depletes Magnesium?

Heavy metals in the body, i.e., Aluminum (in food & drink containers, baking powder, antiperspirants) blocks many normal magnesium functions. Unfortunately, a staple of our society’s diet is white flour, and 85% of it’s magnesium has been removed.

Our high consumption of fats and proteins inhibits magnesium absorption. Environmental pollutants (air, soil & water), emotional stresses and many prescription drugs all aggravate magnesium depletion.

Over 80% or more of the United States population is deficient in magnesium, including many who take supplements regularly. These folks may still think that regular magnesium supplements will fix magnesium deficiency. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case.

Anxiety, stress, depression, the stress of our modern lifestyle, whether chemical, environmental or mental, depletes magnesium reserves far more rapidly than was previously realized.

The following is a list of magnesium depletors. The more dominant they are in your life, the more magnesium your body will need.

Sugar

High sodium diet

Mental stress

Physical stress

Coffee

Alcohol

Low thyroid

Chronic pain

Diuretics

Cola-type sodas

A high calcium diet

Tobacco

High perspiration

Medical drugs of all types

A high carbohydrate diet

Death of a family member

How can Calcium deplete magnesium? Well, Excess calcium can become a real problem. Excess magnesium, on the other hand, is impossible.

Excess calcium combined with low magnesium will create osteoporosis and fragile bones. So, take even more transdermal Magnesium to build strong bones.
